The Family Medicine Residency Program at JFK Medical
Center is designed to train new family physicians
to provide patients a personal medical home that
ensures access to comprehensive medical care
through an ongoing relationship with their patients.
This training emphasizes the family physician's
ability to provide patient care that integrates the
cultural, biological, and psychological dimensions of
a patient’s health, within the context of a
Patient-Centered Medical Home.
Upon completion of the program, residents will be able to competently and independently practice the full scope of Family Medicine, including uncomplicated obstetrics, in the ambulatory, hospital, and long-term care settings. They will also:
- Demonstrate competence in the ACGME competencies of patient care, medical knowledge,
practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills,
professionalism, and systems-based practice.
- Understand that health care is not delivered by an individual and be able to be a member
of a multidisciplinary team approach for delivering and continuously improving patient
care for an identified population.
- Recognize the impact of a patient's emotions on his/her illness and the complicated
interrelationships between the patient, the patient's family and disease. The resident
will have the skill to utilize this knowledge in a diagnostic and therapeutic fashion.
- Understand his/her own medical limitations and know when to consult with and refer to other
specialists, allied health personnel, or community resources. The resident will be able
to coordinate the care of patients whose problems require other medical skills, and
synthesize the results of multiple consultations into one comprehensive program of health
care for the patient or family.
- Utilize practice management skills to adapt his/her method of practice to a variety of health
care delivery settings in order to keep pace with the changing medical environment and
enhanced leadership role of Family Medicine. This will include an understanding of the
Patient-centered Medical Home.
- Play a role in the community in which they practice to impact upon the important health care
issues affecting their patients and the community.
- Develop skills to promote life long learning, understand the principles of research, know how
to read the medical literature critically, and participate in scholarly activities
utilizing the office as a clinical laboratory.
- Understand the importance of medical informatics to the future practice of family medicine,
and become proficient utilizing an electronic medical record and conducting e-visits with
patients.
- Complete a portfolio of accomplishments consisting of their evaluations, Intraining
Examinations, documentation of procedures/diagnoses, and academic projects.
The JFK Family Medicine Residency has maintained its tradition of excellence in teaching since
1976. The program seeks residents committed to their education and provides the atmosphere and
opportunities where this commitment can be nurtured and grow.
